Dry Skin Concerns in Winter Months

09/07/2007

The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cool and dry. Soon we’ll be facing cold harsh winds, indoor heating, dry air outside, dry air inside – and all the problems of winter dry skin. However, the requirements to prevent winter dry skin are almost exactly the same as summer: a few basic lifestyle routines and one good dry skin care solution might be all the skin care you need.

Although winter brings new and different challenges, the basics are the same:

  • Don’t bathe in very hot water and use a filter to strip out chlorine and other chemicals.
  • Don’t use harsh cleansers, soaps or skin care products. The chemicals in these products strip the skin of natural protective oils leaving it dry and sometimes cracked. This, in turn, enables even greater absorption of chemicals, which further dry the skin.
  • Don’t make the mistake of not using sunscreen when playing winter sports. It may not be hot out, but the sun can still cause dry skin. Unfortunately, the chemicals in traditional sunscreens also damage the skin so you have a bit of a catch 22. You can avoid this problem by using a natural sunscreen.
  • Use a shielding lotion to protect against harsh, dry winds, chemicals and pollutants.

Not much different than the summer routine, right?

The truth is there is one basic to maintaining healthy skin, and preventing dry skin, no matter what the season: ensuring that the outer layer stays in tact. The outer protective layer, coated in natural oils, helps the skin retain natural moisture, keeps out chemicals from household products and environmental toxins, and protects us from bacteria and other types of germs.

Unfortunately, no matter what the season, the outer layer is challenged.

How do you overcome these challenges? Thousands of doctors now recommend a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the skin’s outer layer to form a new layer that locks in natural moisture and keeps out chemicals - which is exactly what you need to prevent dry skin, winter and summer.
