Your skin is what protects your body from the outside world. It is also the first thing others will see when they meet you. Is it really a surprise that many people are taking such an interest in their skin care routines that they are sourcing vegan skin care products? If a product does what it should for your skin, why does it matter what it’s made of? To some, it matters a lot!
Ok, so I know no one is planning on eating their skin care products so why does it make a difference if it’s vegan or not? People choose to be vegan or use vegan products for different reasons but some of the reasons why so many people are choosing to be more vegan conscious has to do with animal rights, animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
It won’t come as a shock to know that thousands of skin care products are tested on animals or have animal derived ingredients in them. Some of these ingredients have been around for so many years and you may not have even known that they come from an animal. We are very aware of food ingredients that come from animals but when it comes to our skin, we are often oblivious. Here are just a few ingredients you will find in your skin care products and cosmetics that come from animal-derived sources:
Collagen - Our body produces collagen which helps to keep our skin plump and youthful. As we age, we produce less and lower quality collagen2 so we look for heavy-duty anti-ageing creams to provide it for us. Do you ever think about where this extra collagen comes from? It certainly isn’t coming from another human.
Cochineal Dye - Often called carmine, this ingredient comes from beetles and creates that lovely red colour in your lipsticks and blushes.1,2 Not so lovely anymore, is it?
Guanine - This is most likely sitting on your face right now. It comes from fish scales1,2 and is one way of creating a shimmery look on your eyelashes and lips, and your nails too. Ew, gross!
Tallow - Sounds like a lovely name – but how does it make you feel to think that it’s just like pig’s lard but comes from cows?1 It’s also used in margarine.1 And how would you feel if you had that smeared all over your face right now?
Many of us will want to make sure that the products we use are ethically sourced. If they are made from animal-derived products or tested on animals, we know that the product we are putting on our skin has harmed an animal somewhere in the process. I know that some people aren’t bothered by this and feel it’s a necessary step to get the results they want and I’m not making any judgements. For others, however, this is not ok.
