Dry, Itchy Skin

Also know as Xerodermia (or XerosisCcutis), derived from the Greek words for “dry skin”, is a very common condition that occurs at all ages. Ordinarily, dry skin isn’t serious, but it can be uncomfortable and unattractive, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles.

Severe dry skin conditions – an inherited group of disorders called Ichthyosis – can sometimes be disfiguring and upsetting. Fortunately environmental factors, which can be at least partially controlled, cause most dry skin. These factors include hot or cold weather, low humidity and soaking in hot water.

Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require evaluation by a dermatologist. But first you can do a lot on your own to improve your skin, including using moisturizers and avoiding harsh, drying soaps.

causes of dry itchy skin

Common Causes of Dry, Itchy Skin

Dry skin can be caused by diet, excessively dry or cold weather, dermatitis, hormonal imbalance, allergies and other skin and health disorders. Other causes of dry skin include alcohol exposure as well as other irritants and allergens. In cases of deep fissures, dry cracked skin can lead to infections. In rare cases, if left untreated, skin infections can become systemic and even life-threatening.

Treatment for Dry, Itchy Skin

Dry skin is usually pretty easy to treat. The affected skin should be cleaned thoroughly and a good shielding lotion applied. The shielding lotion helps the skin retain moisture while locking out irritants and allergens that could harm the skin.

You should always consult with a dermatologist when symptoms become severe or are difficult to treat, as the underlying problem may be more serious.

Lifesaver for "Lifesavers"

"Frontline worker during COVID19. With constant hand-washing at work and at home, this product is a lifesaver for your hands. Apply it several times a day though because of how many more times we are having to wash our hands now. Great product."

Truly the Best Lotion

"I’ve been suffering with dermatitis for months, been using creams from doctors but haven’t cleared it up. Within a couple of days of using Gloves in a Bottle, my fingers are the best they’ve been for months, they are calm and not irritated anymore. I’m going to continue using this product along with my prescribed cream until it completely clears up. It feels as though it leaves a protective coating on your hands and would be good in the winter when most people suffer with dry and sore hands."

Itchy Skin

“I am 65 years old and had never had any skin problems until two years ago when the doctors took me off of my hormone pills. I began to notice dry itchy skin, especially on the trunk area and particularly in the winter months. I bought different soaps, creams, lotions, powders and whatever over the counter medications for dry itchy skin I could find. None seemed to give me any relief. I had never been to a dermatologist, but decided maybe this was it. I made an appointment but couldn’t get in for a month.

So in the meantime I started searching the internet for a solution and literally stumbled across Gloves in a Bottle. I placed an order and it came quickly. I started using your lotion and by the time I went for my appointment with the dermatologist my skin had cleared up. I make a point to keep it on hand now.”

My Dermatologist Recommended This Product

"I have dry skin and I get painful, bleeding cracks in my fingertips every winter. I’ve used every lotion and cream known to man, with mixed results. If I’m religious about putting on lotion throughout the day, almost any type will help a little. If I’m religious about putting a thick body butter on them only at night (too greasy for daytime use) that helps too. But I still had problems with cracks and dry skin if I skipped a day or two of using moisturizers.

My dermatologist recommended this product, and I bought a bottle to try. Because this lotion forms a more or less permanent barrier in your top layer of skin, it continues to preserve the moisture in my skin even after washing my hands. It rubs in and dries without leaving a greasy feel, and continues to protect for many hours.

As an experiment, I went 24 hours between applications – in the meantime washing my hands and showering and otherwise abusing my skin. At the end of 24 hours my hands weren’t dried out and ready to crack like they normally would be. This tells me the lotion really does form a barrier and protects my skin. Excellent!”

Cracked, Raw Skin

“Amazing product! I’m a bartender and my hands were always raw, red, and cracked at the end of the night from all the hand-washing and chemicals in the glass-washers. The first time I used this, I put it on before my shift, and my hands were perfectly fine at the end of the night! It’s almost miraculous how well this stuff works, I’ve been recommending it to everyone I know. “

Cracked Fingertips and Dry & Itchy Skin

“At 35 years of age, both of my hands developed scaly, dry areas, mostly on the palm side of the hands and fingers, especially the fingertips. After suffering with persistent itching and bleeding, I visited a doctor about it. The doctor believes that there is something that I’m touching with my hands to which I have developed an allergy. He prescribed “Diprolene”, but was careful to give me a number of dire warnings about how this was very strong medicine, not meant for prolonged use.

The Diprolene did handle the problem, but even if my hands appeared to be completely healed, as soon as I stopped using “Diprolene”, the symptoms would quickly return. This was no long-term solution, so I began trying an assortment of different skin care products from pharmacies, Avon, health food stores, taking vitamin E, etc.

I even tried wearing gloves most of the day to avoid touching anything with the skin of my hands. I’m sure you can imagine how ridiculous I felt walking around with gloves on in the San Antonio summer, plus -it did nothing whatsoever to help the situation. In a nutshell, some of these things made the problem more bearable, but nothing was really helping to heal the problem.

I saw “Gloves In A Bottle” at a Walgreen’s pharmacy in San Antonio, Texas. I bought some and tried it. At first, I really didn’t think that it was doing very much. This product isn’t a moisturizer, like everything else that I tried to use, so it didn’t feel like it was doing anything.

However, the affected skin on my fingers and palms seemed to be slowly improving as long as I was faithful in using this product. I reached a point at which the large scaly patches basically disappeared and my fingers no longer cracked and bled in a few weeks. A few more weeks, and the dry itchy skin on my hands appeared to be nearly perfect again. Thanks!”
